These sourdough dinner rolls take me back to cozy holiday dinners where the scent of freshly baked bread filled the house before a single bite was taken. They’re soft, slightly tangy, and make any meal feel extra special. Bake a batch and share that warmth at your next dinner table!
1 cup active sourdough starter
1/2 cup warm milk
2 tbsp sugar
1 egg
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
Extra melted butter for brushing
In a large bowl, combine starter, warm milk, sugar, egg, and salt. Mix well.
Add flour gradually and mix into a dough. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth.
Add softened butter and knead again until well combined.
Cover and let rise for 4–6 hours at room temp (or overnight in the fridge).
Divide dough into 9–12 equal portions and shape into rolls.
Place rolls in a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise again for 1–2 hours.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown.
Brush with melted butter while hot.
Use a mature, bubbly sourdough starter for the best flavor and rise.
Cold proofing overnight improves the flavor and makes prep easier for busy days.
For extra softness, place a tray of water in the oven to create steam.
