When my grandma used to visit, she’d always bring a basket of her golden sausage muffins, wrapped warm in a tea towel. That comforting smell of cheddar and sausage always meant love was nearby. Now I make these cheesy sausage muffins for busy mornings, cozy brunches, or just a savory snack that brings back those sweet memories. Try it out—you might find a new favorite tradition too.
1 lb ground breakfast sausage, cooked & crumbled
2 cups all-purpose flour (regular or gluten-free)
1 tbsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 tbsp pure maple syrup or sugar
2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1 cup milk
1 egg
6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted & cooled
Optional: Extra cheese for topping
Preheat oven to 400ºF. Cook the sausage in a skillet until browned. Drain and set aside.
Grease muffin tins with non-stick spray.
In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using sugar instead of syrup).
Stir in the cooked sausage and cheddar cheese.
In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, egg, and maple syrup (if using).
Pour wet mixture into dry, then stir in the melted butter until just combined.
Spoon mixture into muffin tins, filling to the top. Add extra cheese on top if you like.
Bake for 18–20 minutes or until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
Let cool 5 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a rack. Serve warm and enjoy!
